GIOS "COMPACT" 1988

60cm center/center – Shimano Dura Ace

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Gios "Compact" from 1988 with complete Shimano Dura Ace 7400 group

Gios Torino bikes, in their traditional blue colours, are probably among the most famous racing bikes of the seventies and eighties. In 1948 Tolmino Gios, who was once a professional cyclist himself and, for example, a member of the Italian national team that took part in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, laid the foundation stone of the company, initially with a bicycle shop. Since the beginning of the 1970s, the company has specialized in racing bikes and since then has provided the material for various racing teams. Gios bicycles achieved their greatest success in the late 1970s with the Brooklyn and IJsboerke racing stables. Roger De Vlaeminck and Patrick Sercu rode Brooklyn on Gios bikes. De Vlaeminck won Paris-Roubaix three times on a Gios bike and Milan-Sanremo, the Tour of Flanders and the Tour of Lombardy. He finished second in the Road World Championship for professionals. A certain Didi Thurau also became famous on Gios bikes. The bike offered here is one of the last racing bike frames made of steel for professional cycling by Gios. At the end of the nineties, Gios equipped the Kelme team with frames.

This Gios Compact from 1988 was a small milestone in the company's history. Around the company's 40th birthday, the company worked on an innovation in frame construction. Aldo Gios developed the adjustable drop-out. The idea behind the innovation was to be able to adapt a frame to the conditions and needs of the riders. You suddenly had the possibility to use wider tires. Also in case of damage, e.g. by a fall, it was no longer necessary to solder in a new dropout. The screwed ends allowed an easier exchange. A further aspect was certainly the marketing and the resulting attention to the company. No other frame builder had such an elegant looking construction in their program.

For the first two years the frame was still made of high quality Columbus tube sets. For this one it is the SLX - later they saved money and had the tubes made by Mannesmann. Also the screws at the dropout are rather rare, because they have a Gios embossing, this was also saved on later models. A frame of this series from the first hour is therefore certainly rarer than the later models.

The bike is built with a complete and nearly new Shimano Dura Ace 7400 group, about whose quality you don't have to talk anymore. The wheelset with Mavic MA40 rims looks like new, even the original tires from that time are absolutely rideable. Even the Rohloff chain has no wear.

From the previous owner of the bike I got a complete set of Gios jerseys with the purchase. One set for the winter and one for the summer. Size L to XL. I would like to return the bike together with the set.

Completely original bike - for lovers of these typical blue racing bikes from GIOS.
